MU 100 Concert Choir (taken each year) 

Study choir methods, vocal skills, comportment, and singing with heart.  Learn what it takes to be a special group singer, receive simple voice lessons, and sing gospel choral music in a variety of styles. 

MU 104 Ear Training and Sight Singing 1

Develop listening skills and sight-singing, including recognizing, writing, and singing rhythms, intervals, and melodies. A must-have skill for the future music leader.

MU 201 Conducting Techniques

Students build skills necessary to lead the church choir and orchestra, including score reading, advanced use of conducting patterns, indicating tempo, volume, etc., with the off-hand while maintaining the beat with the dominant hand, and many other skills. 

MU 203 Song Leading 

Learn to lead a church congregation or small music groups in singing hymns or simple arrangements of hymns in a church setting; this includes a review of basic music reading skills and an understanding of rhythm and meter.

MU 301 Music Theory 4

Learn and practice secondary functions in harmony, inversions, musical forms, and non-chord tones. A student who masters these skills will be able to arrange and write music for the church choir and other vocal groups.

MU 304 Ear Training and Sight Singing 2

Develop listening skills and sight-singing, including recognizing, writing, and singing rhythms, intervals, and melodies. A must-have skill for the future music leader.

MU 402 Church Music Administration

Learn how to build and organize a practical and helpful music ministry in a local church. Along with establishing a Biblical philosophy of music, students will learn to work with volunteers, schedule congregational and special music for church services, conduct singing rehearsals, and much more.

MU 102 Music Theory 1
 

Sharpen your music reading skills in all clefs, including treble, bass, tenor, and alto; review basic rhythmic principles; and study more advanced skills in rhythm and musical form.

MU 105 Music History 1
 

Learn the history of music and the musical eras from the viewpoint of hymns and hymn stories to gain a greater perspective of the hymn writer and song.

MU 202 Song Writing and Arranging 

Participate in a workshop designed to develop song-writing skills, writing and arranging original songs; skills developed include lyric writing, melody writing, score preparation, and choosing chords

MU 204 Music Ministries 

Learn how music is used in various church ministries and how the church music leaders interact with all other aspects of the local church.

MU 302 Music Appreciation 

Learn a Biblical philosophy of music, develop basic music reading skills, gain an overview of music history, and become acquainted with the use of music in churches and its effect on Christianity and the world in which we live.

MU 400 Music Methods 
 

Learn to teach music and music theory one-on-one or in a classroom setting, including such topics as the manner of the teacher, teaching principles of music theory at different levels, and evaluating and correcting faulty instrument techniques.

MU 403 Instrument Workshop 

Grasp the fundamentals of each group of instruments, strings, winds, brass, and percussion, including the basics of playing technique, typical use in choral and instrumental settings, and cleaning and maintenance.

MU 103 Music Theory 2
 

Learn and master building and recognizing harmonic and melodic intervals, study the structure of triads and seventh chords, and begin applying harmonic theories to real-world examples in hymns and hymn arrangements.

MU 106 Piano Lab (taken each year) 

Develop the skills to play piano for the congregational song service, including basic accompaniment styles as well as improvisation. Each student will be instructed according to their individual skill level.

MU 203 Music Technology 
 

Gain practical training on music notation software as well as an overview of audio/visual technology used by the music ministry in church services and special meetings.

MU 300 Music Theory 3

Continue your study of harmonic theory, study principles of melodic theory, and begin learning vocal writing techniques for choir-style parts (SATB).

MU 303 Music History 2

MU 401 Orchestration 
 

Learn to write and arrange for the instruments in a typical church orchestra, both for instrumental settings and as vocal accompaniment. Additionally, learn the organization and running of a church orchestra.
